How eCommerce Packaging Can Increase Sustainability

The global eCommerce plastic packaging market was worth $10.26 billion in 2020 – and it’s expected to grow to $21.78 billion by 2026 – a CAGR (combined annual growth rate) of 13.6%.

But as the market for plastic packaging grows, packaging manufacturers need to think about sustainability. Plastic waste is a huge problem for consumers, with 56% of people saying there’s “too much packaging” in home goods, and 40% highlighting the amount of waste this generates as a serious problem.

So, how can eCommerce packaging increase sustainability? Here are a few ideas from Pearl Technologies.

  1. Reduce Overall Volume Of Plastic Usage
First and foremost, packaging companies can reduce overall plastic usage by adopting things like blister packs, which provide excellent product protection and display potential with relatively low plastic usage.
Using stronger, more durable plastics may also help reduce the overall volume of plastic used to package products. Additionally, finding new ways to incorporate paper and cellulose-based packaging and packing materials can help cut down overall plastic consumption in eCommerce packaging.
  2. Use Recyclable Materials & Provide Clear Recycling Instructions
Recyclability differs throughout the United States, but most states allow for the recycling of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
To reduce plastic waste and increase sustainability, it’s important for packaging manufacturers to use plastics that can be recycled easily, and to provide instructions and information about recyclability on product packaging so that it does not end up in a landfill. Only 9% of plastic waste is recycled – so this, along with raising awareness about plastic recycling, is a critical step.
  3. Adopt Bioplastics
Bioplastics derived from corn, straw, sawdust, and other such sources, and are more sustainable – though more expensive – than traditional synthetic plastics. This is because they’re biodegradable, and can break down over time much more quickly compared to plastics derived from petroleum products.
